Our basset hound recently had a litter of 8 puppies.

Female Basset Hounds are known to give birth to a large litter of pups on average they give birth to 8-14 puppies. During pregnancy the dog should have regular vet visits to avoid complications leading to labor and birth of puppies. I also like to rub my Basset hound down by using a hound glove or a course cloth. This helps their coat to stay smooth and shinny.

How to clean Basset Hound Ears
The best way I clean Buford’s (my basset hound) ears out is with a cotton pad once a week. Don’t be alarmed if your Basset moans and groans. It’s not hurting them, in my case our Basset just likes to make a fuss.
Since Basset Hounds ears are so long they like to collect an assortment of gross things, such as; dirt, food, etc. If not cleaned properly their ears can become irritated and even infected.

Trimming Basset Hound Nails
When trimming nails I like to clip my Bassets nails about every 1 to3 weeks. I use a good pair of dog nail clipper. When clipping you must always be aware of the dogs quick. If you cut into this it will cause your dog pain and bleeding. By clipping your dogs’ nails it helps them walk correctly and helps displace weight properly.

Bathing a Basset Hound
When trying to know when its time for your stinky Basset to have a bath, it should be a given (stinky dog) equals bath time. Make sure to shampoo a couple times because there coat is very oily and likes to retain smell. After you are done with shampooing move on to a conditioner, this helps protect there coat.
Lastly you want to use a cotton pad, dipped in lukewarm water, and clean the dirt and gunk out of the area under the eyeball.

Basset Hound History

Where do Basset Hounds originate from?

The Basset Hound history is very interesting. Basset Hounds originated from France in the 1500’s. The Basset Hound breed comes from the Hound family. They are one of the best dogs used for hunting rabbits. They have an excellent sense of smell second to the Bloodhound. While hunting with a Basset Hound you should expect with a keen nose and short stature that they are best suited for small game hunting. There are not many clubs left that hunt with Bassets. An assortment of groups that hunt with Basset Hound, do not hunt to kill, they are merely are testing the Basset’s tracking and trailing capabilities. Basset Hounds have folds of skin under their chin, called the dewlap, that helps trap and hold and trap scents. This is very beneficial when it comes to rabbit hunting, and tracking down hidden food under the coach.

Basset Hounds were originally bred to have Osteochondrodysplasia. Osteochondrodysplasia means the disorder and development of the bone and cartilage. This is known as dwarfism, even thought they are very short do not under estimate these cute dogs. They are surprisingly long, and don’t think that they can’t reach that tasty donut that you have sitting on the table. Basset Hounds are funny dogs are great at reaching things, which you would certainly not be, the first thing that comes to mind.

This blog has moved
This blog is now located at http://blog.bassethound.jeremyinc.com/.
You will be automatically redirected in 30 seconds, or you may click here.

For feed subscribers, please update your feed subscriptions to
http://blog.bassethound.jeremyinc.com/feeds/posts/default.

Basset Hound Health Problems

What are common health problems in Basset Hounds?
The life span of a Basset Hound is 10-12 years. Some of the health problems that your Basset could end up getting are; since Basset Hounds have extremely long ears for a dog, they are prone to getting ear diseases. If you allow your Basset Hounds ears to dangle in there food at feeding time or hang to the ground while playing outside they can develop fatal ear disease. However, not all Bassets end up with diseases like this when taken care of correctly. Also Basset Hounds can have eye issues. These loveable dogs have those sad droopy eyes, that can sometimes collect dirt in the open area under there eyeball. If this area collects dirt it can then produce mucus that will end up creating a clog. To help prevent this one can clean the area once a day with a warm damp cloth.

Another health issue your Basset can be prone to is having yeast infections. The yeast infections can form around the folds of the mouth. To help prevent, you can wipe down the mouth if you happen to see your lovable pet drooling everywhere. Plus another benefit to wiping there face they won’t goo up the place. Basset Hounds can also experience allergies, fungal on their feet, and can bloat. If bloating occurs, one must take immediate action and take them to the vets. The last health issue that may affect your Basset Hound is laziness. If allowed they can become very over weight. To prevent this from happening make sure to let your Basset Hound have plenty of exercise daily.

Basset Hound Temperament

What is a Basset Hounds temperament like?

The temperament of a Basset Hound is generally friendly they are extremely tolerant and love everyone in the family equally. I know my Basset Hound gets very upset if he sees someone and they do not automatically come up to him and give him attention. This is why Bassets are a great companion/pet for children. They have enough energy that can match a Childs. When training a Basset Hound they tend to “forget” there training if you do not use a treat to reward them. They are also very smart when it comes down to what they want. My Basset Hound, Buford when hungry will run to where my mom keeps his dog food and kick and kick until she opens the cabinet to feed him. He is also very voice tress and tries to act tough, however he is a baby at heart.

Basset Hound Appearance

What Does A Basset Hound Look Like?

The appearance of a Basset Hound can come in a number of different colours. The main colours that you would see on a Basset Hound are (tri-Color, red & white, honey/lemon & white, Blue/Gray, and black & tan) these aren’t apparent on all bassets. The Basset Hound is a short legged dog, with a heavy build; they can weigh 37-75 pounds when fully grown and also can reach a height of 12-15 inches tall.

If you’re not a big fan of a hairy dog then a Basset is just right for you. Their coat is short, smooth and shiny. However, they still shed. The Basset Hounds head is proportional, they have an even bite, their eyes are often a soft brown, and are slightly sunken into the face and appear sad. They have ears that are very long, when extended forward they can reach their noses. The tail on a basset is slightly curved, erect when walking and has a white tip on the end, this helps for tracking the dog while hunting. The Basset Hound is a very stronger and powerful dog so when walking on a leash, be very careful. Their feet are quite large and very tough (heavy padded). They are classified as a medium sized dog.

Do not let the appearance of your basset hound trick you, they are a very short dog, however if they want some that is way above their heads. They will jump up and reach it. My pup does this all the time.
